One of the activities that I always ask if my clients want to incorporate is the tradition of the Chinese Wedding Door Games. In essence it occurs when the groom goes to pick up the bride on their wedding day. This is not just a fun way of having the opportunity to capture some whimsical moments in wedding photography as part of the wedding celebrations, but there is a significant historical component to this part of the Chinese wedding traditions and rituals.
These door games originated from long ago when family and friends were reluctant to see the bride marry and move away. They would conjure up ways of blocking the groom’s access to the bride at the bride’s door by various means. Many times these would be a test of skill; whether it be a test of depth of knowledge, human strength, creativity of romance, and/or courageous acts. Often times these games involve the groom buying his way into the bride’s home with token money in the traditional Red Lucky Envelopes.
Here are just a few fun pictures from previous weddings that we helped plan. Yes and sometimes we have had to help some parametres around these games as well.
These Chinese Wedding Door Games can be played anywhere; from where the hotel of the bride is getting ready to her own home, or even at the couple’s new place of residence. Everything just depends on tradition, timing, and the particular couple’s specific considerations. Now let the games begin!
Here are the groom and groomsmen asked to go do a series of jumping jacks and push ups as a sign a strength.
Here is a photograph of the groom professing not only the virtues of his future bride, but his love for the her by reciting poetry.
Some guys really have fun with the token money that they give by handing out Canadian Tire Money or the Chinese Yuan or even the Russian Ruble.
